The Red Sea has been an important international waterway since time immemorial. The first record of a trading expedition in the Red Sea dates back to year 1493 BC, when Queen Hatchepsut of Egypt sent a fleet of five vessels from El Quseir, on the Red Sea mainland coast, to the Land of Punt, near present-day Somalia.

Kormoran Wreck

The Rostock shipyards (Germany) was coming from Aqaba with a cargo of phosphate when an error in navigation caused it to hit the northern side of the reef bordering the island of Tiran, known by divers as Laguna Reef. The impact was tremendous and the vessel, which in 1980 had been renamed Zingara, lost almost all of its bow, and two large cracks opened on its left.
