Dear CDWS members,
The CDWS reports that unfortunately a part of the Dunraven wreck has broken off and separated from the wreck’s hull. There are also signs that other parts of the wreck have some fractures that may break apart and collapse.
For the safety of the divers visiting the Dunraven, the CDWS warns against diving near the damaged part of the wreck, as it may break suddenly and collapse.
In April 1876, the Dunraven struck a reef near the southern tip of the Sinai
Peninsula and sank, it is an underwater cultural heritage site and one of the most important wreck diving destinations in Egypt. It is visited by divers from all over the world. It is extremely important to preserve it from any damage caused by activities or bad practices.
The CDWS, the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage, and the administration of cultural heritage at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities are collaborating on developing programs to protect and preserve the shipwrecks of Egypt and to spread awareness on the matter.
